UK homes are becoming increasingly at risk from bad weather, with 11% of British homes being damaged in the last five years, according to Abbey Home Insurance. Roofs and gardens are the most likely places to incur a battering from the elements, although interiors are also affected, with a quarter of all damage caused taking place inside properties, for example where loose tiles cause water to leak into the house.
Those in Wales and the South West worry most about bad weather damaging their property, while the Scottish are the most laid back with only 29% feeling concerned about potential damage to their homes.
However, it is not all doom and gloom as our bad weather may be bonding our local communities together. Three-fifths of us check on elderly relatives, neighbours or friends in the event of severe weather.
Lloyd Wilson, head Of Abbey Home Insurance product development, said: “Bad weather damage is a costly inconvenience and for some people, especially in flood areas, it is becoming a yearly nightmare. Our research shows that the risk of damage to our homes is an ever-increasing reality and we need to be prepared for it.
“The British weather is highly unpredictable but we can all ensure that should the worst happen we are correctly insured by having the right insurance.”
