Mortgages: Mixed economic news keeps U.S. mortgage rates in check Fame it!

The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.06% for the week ending May 1, up from 6.03% last week, according to Freddie Mac's weekly survey. The mortgage rate is still lower than it was at this time a year ago, when it averaged 6.16%. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage headed the other direction, averaging 5.59% this week, down from 5.62%. The mortgage averaged 5.87% a year ago.
